According to foreign media reports, South Korea's top telecommunications company KT has developed a high-precision positioning information system called Vision GPS, which is based on lidar sensors and can be used by autonomous vehicles in crowded urban areas.
Lidar is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to illuminate a target and uses a sensor to measure the reflected light to determine the distance of the object. KT said it can use lidar sensors to maintain high accuracy in its positioning information system in downtown areas where GPS performance has declined.
KT Company stated that the Vision GPS tracking system recognizes the changes in the feature points extracted from the lidar image, and does not require a separate 3D image database to calculate distance and location. Moreover, unlike a camera, the system can perform measurements stably without being affected by weather or light.
